Five Great FREE Photo Sources

Finding pictures for your blog can be tough, but without them, your site will seem boring and lifeless. I won't tsk-tsk you for stealing images from Google, but Man Bundled up in Parka Holding a Camera Ready to Take a Photographremember...it is stealing.

But this isn't a debate about how to use pictures - it is about the best way to actually find pictures you can use, guilt-free, on your blog. Here are the top five resources I use:

Stock Xchange: There are tons of free "general" pictures on this site, and most of them don't even require attribute. Just make sure to check if they do ask for attribution so that you're following by the site's rules. If they want a byline and link, the photographer will say so below the picture.

WikiCommons: Wikipedia's rule is that you can't upload a picture unless it is free to be used by others. Well, MOST of the time. There are special circumstances, but in general, you can use pictures you find on this site. However, most of the time you have to source the author, so make sure you do that on your site.

Flickr's Creative Commons: Users on this site allow you to use pictures they've marked as part of the Creative Commons. You have to attribute the picture to the user. If you use WordPress, I highly recommend the Photo Dropper plugin, which lets you search and add pictures (with automatic attribution) to your posts.

Morgue File: I'm not 100% experienced with this, as I don't use this site often. However, I know that tons of bloggers swear by it, so you should check it out. From what I see, it is a lot like Stock Xchange.

Amazon: You can't just USE Amazon photos...but sign up for the affiliate program, and you're free to use pictures of any product. As an added bonus, you might earn a little cash with the links!

BONUS SITE:

All Posters: Like Amazon, this site is an affiliate program. However, it is a poster site, so there are a TON of pictures that you can use for your blog! Again the added bonus is that you can potentially make some money at this site.

And I hope you'll say "thank you for telling me about All Posters" by signing up at my affiliate link! Here's the AP information:

Hey Webmasters! - Make $$$
The AllPosters.com Affiliates Program is a great way to make money with your website. All you have to do is place links on your site to AllPosters.com. When your site visitors click on your links and make purchases at AllPosters.com, you earn 25%-30% of the sale.
Sign up today!

Hope you found some really great sites to use for pictures. See something that's not on my list? Tell me in a comment!

How to be a Great Guest Blogger

Guest blogging is somewhat of an art. Not everyone is good at it - I've read some horrible guest blog posts in the past few months. However, the right post on the right site can bring in tons of pageviews from both of the involved parties. Yes, guest blogging can be a success! Here's how to be a good guest blogger:

Solicit for guest blogging spots. Not every blogger accepts guest blog submissions, but it can't hurt to ask. When you do ask, however, make sure that you're a regular reader and actually have something to say. If you're just trying to do short posts everywhere to link back to your site, you don't cut it as a guest blogger.

Never ask for payment. Guest blogging isn't charity, but it isn't paid work. You don't guest blog for money, you do it for a link exchange or for the opportunity to talk about something you love. So before you commit to doing a guest blog post, make sure that it will benefit you and the other blogger mutually.

Send in perfect work. Everyone makes mistakes, but if your blog post is filled with errors, the blogger might be ashamed to post it. That's not a good thing! In addition, you must be sure to keep with the style and tone of the blog. It is YOUR post in YOUR voice...but it is still THEIR blog.

As it so happens, I'm opening this blog for guest posts for the beginning of May, when I'll be away for a week. Are you interested? I'm looking for people who have experience in the blogging world (on any and all topics) and can give me an original take on a blogging method, technique, or tool. You can also write a post about saving money, as I cover that on this blog as well. Posts can be as long or as short as you want. All posts will include up to three links back to your various sites. I need your post and two-three sentence bio by Thursday, May 1, 2008.

If you're interested, email me at allison.boyer at yahoo.com with your proposed title and (if it isn't obvious) what you'd like to talk about in the post!

I won't be gone forever, so if I get tons of emails, I will only be able to accept the best ideas - but thanks in advance for your emails!

(Note, please put "guest blogger" in the subject of your email.)

Crap

My huge list of blogging jobs...just accidentally got deleted. Yes, I am an idiot.

For now, visit Freelance Writing Jobs and Problogger for a daily dose of goo online jobs for writers. I'll be back on Saturday. Sorry!

Note to self: If you accidentally hit the "close" button, don't also accidentally hit the "close without saving?" option. Sigh.

Headlines are all about Sex: Writing the Perfect Headlines for your Blog

Ok, maybe headlines are all about sex, but this demonstrates a point I wanted to get across today:

Without an excellent title, fewer people will stop to read your blog post.

I subscribe to a number of blogs via my feed reader. I check them out over lunch, and although I'm subscribed to less than 30 blogs, I usually have 100+ posts to read. I never, ever read them all. So how do I decide what gets that second glance? Easy - the headline.

I'm looking for something to catch my eye. Like most Internet users, I move very, very quickly. In other words, if you don't catch my attention in the first ten seconds, I'm clicking on to the next website. Sorry.

So how do you create post titles that will make your readers actually read the post itself? Consider the following tips:

  • Use something "shocking" to grab attention. For example, in this post, I said that headlines are all about sex. Sex sells. You don't have to use sex, though. Start off with anything controversial, and people will want to read it.
  • Tell me exactly what the post is about. If there's some kind of useful information in your post, I'll want to read it. For example, I coudl have effectively called this post "Tips for Writing Headlines that will Drive Traffic to your Blog." Don't worry about being boring. Boring is OK if you have some really useful information for me.
  • Give me your opinion right away. People crave opinion pieces, not news stories. The stronger you opinion is, the better. For exmample, a post called "Why I'm not Voting for Hillary Clinton" is better than "Should you Vote for Hillary Clinton?". Take a stance, and stand firm.
  • Promise that You're going to save me time or money. I don't have a lot of either, so I want to know that reading your post isn't going to waste my time. "Ten Quick Tips for Growing the Perfect Garden" will do better than "How to Grow the Perfect Garden."
  • SEO your headline! This is a big one - search engines love headlines, and so if you use keywords that people use, you'll drive traffic AND get that second look from subscribers. In my headline, for instance, I've used the keyword phrases "headlines for your blog" and "perfect headlines" and "writing perfect headlines" - all things that people might be searching for.

Of course, you can't use every tip every time your write a headline. Try to hit two or three of them for every post, though. That way, you'll catch the eyes of subscribers as well as pull new readers into your blog.

And speaking of subscribers, don't forget to sign up for The Millionaire Blogger with your RSS feed reader!

Commission Junction - Worth it for Bloggers?

If you run your own blog, affiliate programs are one of the best ways to make money with your content. Commission Junction is one of the "big names" in the affiliate program world. This website lets you sign up for hundreds of different programs from companies all around the web. Instead of having to sign in to a ton of different websites every day to look at your stats, CJ is a portal that aggregates your programs.

Is this worth the sign up for bloggers? Here's a quick run-down of the pros and cons as I see it.

Advantages to Commission Junction:

  • It is easier to sign into one website to look at all your affiliate programs than to sign into multiple websites.
  • Most programs on their own have a minimum payout of $50. CJ combines these all. So, if you earn just $5 from a program, it is combined with other programs and you hit your minimum sooner (and thus money doesn't sit in your account).
  • Their stats reports are really easy to understand.
Disadvantages to Commission Junction:
  • Sometimes the site is fast, but in my experiences it is REALLY slow the majority of the time. The stats part is never a problem, but some days it is nearly impossible to create new links because the site is running too slowly
  • If you're signed up with multiple websites, some advertisers will say no to you. Why? They only want their ads on sites that are relevant. Sure, that makes sense. Say you're applying to a computer company's program for your tech site, but you also run ads on your gambling blog. The company might say no, even if you were only planning to run their ads on your tech site.
  • There's significant lag time between when you make your money and when your check gets mailed. They total you up for the month, and then your check gets mailed at the end of the FOLLOWING month. In the meantime, they don't take that money off of your account total or put up a notice about how much your next check will be, so it can get confusing.
Is CJ worth is? I say yes, simply because it is really easy to sign up and add the links to your website.

This is a good place to start if you're thinking about implementing affiliate ads into your blog, but keep in mind that one of the biggest affiliate programs, Amazon, is not a part of CJ. Amazon gives 4% back, which isn't great, but which is better than some of CJ's programs, so it may be a better move for you to use Amazon soem of the time.

I'll talk about Amazon later this week. For now, if you want to learn more about CJ or sign up, you can do so at http://www.cj.com (and for the record, that is not an affiliate link)!

Give me your advice...

I'm posing a question to you guys today instead of trying to dish out advice:

How do you deal with a blogger you just don't like?

Here's the thing...I generally respect anyone who can teach me something or who can hold an intelligent conversation with me. And yes, the blogger in question can do both.

I just genuinely dislike this person. Like, really dislike.

What's bad about that? Well, avoiding this blogger means that I'm cutting myself off from some great bloggy resources in one of the fields where I write. In addition, if I make an effort to be friends with this blogger, there's a good chance that it will help my career.

Problem is that I think this blogger is full of shit. I think that this blogger has way to much success for what the blog puts forth on a daily basis. And yes, I think this blogger has a huge ego. I'd love to see this blogger fail, and that's something I rarely wish on anyone.

So leave me a comment - what do you do when someone who can help you professionally is someone you have a hard time tolerating?

Focus! Your Blog Topic and Your Popularity

I read a very good blog about college football (I won't name that blog here) as part of my daily troll for news for my own college football blog. I love said blog because the writers are funny and original...but I do have one main problem.

Every week, there are about 5 or so stories posted that have nothing to do with college football.

Have these departures from the topic made me stop reading this blog? Well, no. Not yet. But I'm considering it. When a blog's focus is split, it doesn't target the right audience. This blog in particular the college football blog, for example, does a weekly feature about hot women. It has nothing to do with college football. They aren't even hot cheerleaders or hot sports starts. They're just pictures of hot women.

And that says to me that they think only guys are reading their blog. It makes me feel unwanted and even a little intimidated.

That's just a single example, though. Say you write a blog about Technology. Once a week, however, you feature pictures of your kids doing something cute. No big deal, right? Wrong. Here's how that will hurt you:

  • Someone coming to your site for the first time will be super confused and may click the back button before they realize that this is a once-a-week thing ad the rest of your cite really is about Technology.
  • Regular readers who aren't interested will feel like having your blog on their blogroll is a waste of time. They'll start ignoring you and, eventually, delete you.
  • Advertisers visiting your site will be less likely to invest, since your concentration seems split.

The more focused your topic, the better.

Now, I'm not saying that you should NEVER stay off topic. Sometimes, it is justified. For example, when I see a really cool contest, I'll promote it even if it is a little off topic. When a tragedy occurs, I'll make a note honoring the victims when I can. Sometimes, if the news is really cool, I'll report on something that is mildly related to my topic but not 100% on point.

However, on a daily basis, if you're staying off topic with more than 1 in 20 posts, you should rethink your blog's focus. Consider starting another blog so you can cover all of your interests separately!

*Note: I do understand that many people have journal-like personal blogs that don't focus on any topic. The advice I spew forth here is about professional blogs about a certain topic.

March 2008 Blogging Total

Here's a quick rundown of my March 2008 blogging income. Wasn't the best month - but good news: I got a new blogging job! You can now read me at Greener Assets, a blog where business and the environment collide! So that will add on in April!

Grand Total: $296.30

  • from PageViews (paid by networks): $65.30
  • from Base Pay (paid by networks): $75
  • from Ads: $0

  • from Blogging Admin Duties: $6
  • from "flat" fees for writing blog posts: $150

To Go: $998,368.83

At my current rate, it will take me...er...100+ more years (give or take a few months) to reach the million. Time to boost my earnings! Here are some of the things I plan to do in March:

  • Apply for more "pay per post" blogging jobs through my business, ABContent.

What are you doing to increase your blogging earnings?
